Why gaharu is known as a cash crop?

Gaharu trees are also known as the golden tree because it will form highly priced gaharu when it is hurt and infected by fungi. There are no any other sick trees that can be more worthy than gaharu  trees. This magical plant belongs to family Thymelaeaceae which is primarily from genus Aquilaria and Gyrinops. However, primarily Aquilaria is found in Malaysia. Four types of Aquilaria spp. preferable by consumers are Aquilaria malaccensis, A. microcarpa,and Aquilaria sinensis.

      The reason gaharu is so worthy is because of its multifunctional usages. It is sold in the forms of wood chips, pure gaharu oils and gaharu end products. It is processed into medicinal products, aromatic oil, fragrance, incense in religious ceremonies, meditation, pleasant purposes, daily items like shampoo, soap and cosmetic products and lastly gaharu accessories.

      Due to its multifunctional usages, the demands of gaharu are increasing day by day. As stated by Deputy Director of Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), Dato Dr. Abdul Rashid Abdul Malik comments, on 2011 only, the word demands for 4.5 million kilograms of gaharu per year and this is only the official figure and unofficial information indicates that the world demands 6.0 million kilograms of gaharu per year where only 35% are met and Malaysia comes in the third place with only six percent of global supply (Anonymous, Malaysia want to be Asia's Gaharu Trading Center, 2009).
